Earthen Gifts
When a rootling is created, the ancient magic they inherit grants them "earthen gifts." These features can be anything found naturally occurring in the rootlings' world. Plants, minerals, and other natural substances will merge with the rootling's bodies and become a part of their forms.
Things that Exist in Our World
Plants, feathers, and other features that appear on the rootlings may be real, existing things that we find on our own earth. This plant, rock, crystal, fungi, or other element might have existing lore of its own that can interact with who your rootling chooses to be. For example, a bonsai tree represents harmony, wisdom, and calmness, so a rootling given a bonsai tree may or may not feel the need to lean into those traits as well. Things Imagined by the Player The natural features of rootlings are not limited to existing things in our world! Lumesse magic affects rootling bodies in creative ways, therefore, the earthen gifts can be new, creative plants and things that a player chooses to design. Players may also dramatize existing flora be more fantastical in appearance. The player might write up an entire lore and purpose for this feature, or leave it a mystery. |
The earthen gifts may sometimes be alight with lumesse magic.
Geographical Effects
Some specific natural substances can only be found in certain regions of the world. However, this does not limit the rootling magic. A rootling may have its coronation, or temple birth, in one part of the world, but receive an earthen gift from across the globe. Sometimes the rootling will feel a deep need to seek out the natural location of this treasure and make its home there.

Personality Altering Beliefs
The earthen gifts may be seen by the rootlings as mere decoration, or entirely separate sentient beings. Which of these is true is unknown, but the rootlings will sometimes form very strong attachments and ideas about their gifts. The way they act, think, feel, and the places they go might be governed by what they believe about their gift to be true. If the rootling has its own personal goals, the earthen gift may clash with it. For example, opals are associated with failure and misfortune, so a rootling bearing it may have a hard time believing it can succeed. The earthen gift may act as a guide, or deciding factor, that your rootling decides to build its life around. Even still, the rootling may ignore its earthen gifts altogether and treat them as any other part of its body. |

What They Can Be
Earthen gifts can be anything you might find in the natural world. The options include plants, minerals, soil, feathers, shells, bones, and more. Most rootlings will don at least one plant, but not all follow this. The only exceptions are elements such as fire, water, lightning, and wind. These hold greater power and must be earned through practicing with it. There are story prompts dedicated to earning elemental powers.
