The Slain
dead ones. rotten ones. lost ones.
Rottlings
They aren't evil, they were never evil. They were always souls. Just another soul trying to serve its purpose in this world. But now it stands here in misery. Its lumesse is tarnished, destroyed. It's body has become decayed, torn, rotten. Lumesse magic leaks from its wounds. Its eyes are always glowing. It has lost soundness of mind and can only focus on bitter hate. This a rootling who has endured a crippling wrong. This a rootling who has become cursed alongside its dwelling.

What Happened to Them?
Rootlings are bound to the earth by sacred magic. The dwelling a rootling chooses is under its protection for the rest of the rootling's life. If a rootling is slain, or rendered helpless to defend its dwelling, it will become a rottling. Rottlings are sometimes created when hunters or poachers strike rootlings with weapons. A damaging blow meant to kill can cause this phenomena to occur. It is rare, but it can happen. Humans who carelessly pollute the land can cause the rootling who dwells there to become a rottling. People who tear down or destroy the landscape can cause the rootling who dwells there to become a rottling. Humans interested in resource gathering in the wild will often scout an area for rootlings before they begin to make sure this tragedy does not occur, but some are not so cautious as this.

The player must complete a series of prompt artworks before their rootling becomes a rottling
Rottling Quests
- The Adversary | a new foe has entered the scene. Depict a budding conflict for your rootling. Show us a new character who will become a problem for the dwelling later on. Show us how the problem began, and why.
- *construction break, be back tomorrow
Rules for Rottling Characters
- Dwelling | a rottling was a rootling with a deep connection to its dwelling. A rottling had completed all of its dwelling prompts before the slaying event had occured.
- Confined | rottlings cannot leave their dwelling once they have been slain. They are chained to the place they could not guard. They are forced to watch it go down, and they are full of resentment from it. They will attack anything living in sight.
- Crazed | they are only thinking about the wrong that has happened to their dwellings, and they can't communicate with rootlings or animals anymore. They are out of their minds. They are now haunting the dwelling.
- Clans | if a clan doesn't defend its territory, the leader could become a rottling. When this occurs, the other clan members may either flee (and return their lumesse to the color at coronation), or stand loyal to the bitter end and become rottlings themselves.
Family Bonds
A rootling who has been slain may have had family, friends, a mate, or even a bonded human. How do these characters feel about losing their loved one? A rottling may still be existing on the earth, but the rootling it once was is locked away somewhere. It may be harder to witness a rottling than for a rootling to fall silently. You may choose to illustrate or write about how these characters respond to the rottling. They may try to reason or reach out and become injured in some way.

Breaking the Curse
Although at this point it seems like all is lost, there is still hope for this lost rootling. While something terrible has been done, it is possible to seek to resolve it. A development of humans might band together to repay the wrongdoing of generations past, they might work together to heal the land, or a rootling might seek to restore the fallen dwelling to its former glory despite the rottling's presence. Breaking a rottling's curse takes a lot of time and effort, but it is healthy for the rootling and the world.

Celestial Ascent
If a slain rootling, a rottling, has found its forgiveness, it is able to move on to the celestial plain. This can happen when all the resolution quests have been fulfilled and the rootling is at peace once again. The celestial plain consists of different moons that are suspended around the rootling's earth. Moons can be created and designed by players whose rootlings are ready to ascend, or they may view Observatory to see what moons already exist so far. The Observatory will be updated as we discover new information on these celestial lands!
